I’ve been taking pictures since about the age of 10 when I bought my first camera, an old fold-out Argus that looked a lot like this one. It was a simple camera with little or no accoutrements for artistic expression, at least not the cheap version I had. It was difficult enough just to figure out what the camera was seeing as opposed to what you could fit into the viewfinder. It didn’t always correlate. The film that was available for this camera only took about ten photographs, and it was too expensive for a ten-year-old, so it’s not surprising I don’t have many of those old pictures anymore, but I treasure what I have and if I can get the proper permissions I might put some of them up sometime. They’re in black and white because that’s the only kind of film you could buy in those days. (My, my, my. We HAVE come a long way, baby!)

Later, when I got my first 35mm, I began using film for slides, only having those I considered the best printed for posterity or whatever. With the advent of digital cameras, I’m able to click away with little or no restraint. I don’t bother much with photo-fixing software. so almost everything you’ll see here are as taken. I figure if you take a hundred pictures, you’re pretty apt to get two or three you like. That’s my adage.

My other blog, My Wintersong, is a compilation of stories from the past plus present day musings from the comfortable setting of the winter of my years, now that enough time has gone by that I can view things with more perspective. I blog wintersong because there aren’t usually many people with time or patience to sit and chat and listen to the old stories by us old farts. But they are out there, and sometimes they find you and drop by, and we become blogswap buddies. I’ve met lotsa nice people that way.

The same could be said about looking at the pictures I take, especially the things I think are special enough to capture at a moment in time. I suspect that there are people out there somewhere who feel much the same as I do. With this blog I will be talking with pictures, with a little assist from the titles at times. I figure if it doesn’t say something to you without me explaining anything, then it’s not for you.

If it does say something to you, provoke a nice memory perhaps or remind you of some of the subtlety of life lived, I’d really like it if you leave a comment. I promise I don’t do a thing with your email address; it’s only there so I can send you a nice thank you note and then it’s discarded. And if this non-professional approach to both blogging and/or photography appeals to you, do drop by often to see what’s new, or better yet grab your own camera–or buy yourself one if you don’t already have one– and take your own pictures; start your own blog. Then don’t forget to invite me!

By the way, if you have a photo site and would like to be on Photoplay’s Blogroll, let me know. I haven’t started it yet because at this writing this blog is in its infancy (2 days!) And maybe you wouldn’t mind adding me to your blogroll too. With rare exceptions, which will be noted by attribution, all the photographs are my property and taken by me. Please be thoughtful and don’t copy or distribute without asking. I’m pretty much a pushover and will probably say yes anyhow–unless you’re using it for commercial reasons–but there’s probably little to worry about there.
